Dual-Climate (Low-E) Window Insulation Film
Improve Insulation and Comfort Year-Round
Natural sunlight can help brighten a space, but many homes and buildings lose significant heat through their windows during winter. Dual-climate window films are designed to improve the insulation performance of existing glass, helping keep warmth inside during colder months while still reducing heat gain during summer. In simple terms, dual-climate window film works like a thermal barrier for your glass — helping keep heat inside during winter and outside during summer.
These films use low-emissivity (Low-E) technology to slow the transfer of heat through the glass. By reflecting indoor heat back into the room during winter and rejecting solar heat during summer, dual-climate window films help create more stable indoor temperatures throughout the year. This makes them one of the most effective ways to improve the thermal performance of existing windows without the cost and disruption of replacing glazing.
Dual-climate films can improve the insulation performance of existing windows by up to 88%, reduce winter heat loss by up to 48%, and reject up to 75% of solar heat during summer — helping maintain more consistent indoor temperatures across all seasons. They also block 99% of harmful UV rays, helping protect furniture, flooring, artwork and interior finishes from fading. These films are available in optically clear or reflective finishes: clear films maintain the natural appearance of the glass, while reflective options add solar control and daytime privacy. These films are widely used in:

Frequently Asked Questions
I don’t like the mirrored reflective look
Dual-climate window films are available in optically clear or reflective finishes. The clear version maintains the natural appearance of the glass, while reflective options add solar control and daytime privacy. Reflectivity levels vary depending on the product, and we’ll help you choose the most suitable option for your windows.
Can you see through window film at night?
When it is darker outside than inside, visibility works the same as untreated glass. Reflective films can provide daytime privacy, however interior lighting at night may allow people outside to see in.
Will window film reduce natural light?
Optically clear dual-climate films are designed to maintain natural light while improving insulation performance. Reflective versions may slightly reduce visible light depending on the product. During our assessment we help balance insulation performance, thermal control and the amount of natural light you would like to maintain.
Is the film installed on the inside or outside of the glass?
Dual-climate window films are installed on the inside surface of the glass. Installing the film internally protects it from weather and physical damage while allowing the Low-E coating to work effectively to reflect heat back into the room during winter and reduce solar heat gain during summer.
Will the film turn purple or fade?
Purple discolouration is typically caused by older dye-based films. The films we install are not dye-based and are designed for Australian conditions. They are backed by lifetime manufacturer warranties.
What’s the difference between professional window film and hardware or online store tint?
Dual-climate window films are specialist architectural products and, as far as we’re aware, are not available through hardware stores or typical online retailers. These films are supplied through authorised installers and require proper assessment and installation to ensure they perform correctly and do not cause issues such as thermal stress.
Will there be joins in the film?
Most windows can be installed without joins or seams. If a pane exceeds the maximum roll width (typically around 1.8 m × 1.8 m), a join may be required. If this is likely, we will discuss it with you before installation.
What brands do you use?
AlpineTint is an authorised installer for 3M and Solar Gard, two of the most respected manufacturers in the window film industry. We also work with other specialist suppliers when a particular product is the best fit for a project.
Dual-climate window film vs double glazing
Can I purchase the film and install it myself?
Professional installation is recommended, as achieving a clean and long-lasting finish requires specialised tools and techniques. AlpineTint typically installs these films to ensure the best performance, appearance and warranty coverage.
Is window film suitable for double or triple glazing?
In many cases, yes — however double glazing already performs well when it comes to insulation and heat retention, so the improvement from window film may be smaller compared to single glazed windows. AlpineTint is Window Energy Rating Scheme accredited, which means we can accurately assess the thermal performance of your existing glazing and advise whether dual-climate window film will deliver a meaningful improvement. If your windows are already performing well, we’ll tell you. If film will help improve insulation and comfort, we’ll explain the options.
Many building owners consider replacing windows to improve insulation. However, dual-climate window film can significantly improve thermal performance at a fraction of the cost. In many cases, even our most expensive films cost around a third of the price of replacing windows with double glazing, while avoiding the disruption, construction work and time involved in replacing existing glazing. By improving insulation and reducing heat transfer through existing glass, window film can deliver year-round comfort improvements without the cost and disruption of full window replacement.
