Solar Control Window Film
Reduce Heat, Glare and Energy Costs
Natural sunlight helps brighten and open up a space, but too much solar heat and glare can quickly make homes and buildings uncomfortable. Solar control window films — traditionally known as window tint — are designed to reduce heat, control glare and improve energy efficiency while maintaining natural light and visibility.
By rejecting a large portion of the sun’s heat before it enters through the glass, solar control films help create more stable indoor temperatures, reducing hot spots and lowering the demand on air conditioning systems. This makes solar control window film one of the most cost-effective ways to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of existing buildings without replacing the windows.
Solar control films can reject up to 82% of solar heat, reduce glare and block 99% of harmful UV rays, helping protect furniture, flooring, artwork and interior finishes from fading. By improving thermal performance and reducing cooling loads, solar control films can also help lower energy consumption and reduce operating costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
I don’t like the mirrored reflective look
Many solar control films are now designed to be neutral or only lightly reflective, meaning they won’t give your windows the traditional mirrored appearance. Clear, tinted and subtle reflective options are available depending on the look and performance you prefer. If you do prefer the classic mirrored finish, we offer those options too. The type of glass you have will often dictate which films are best suited, and we’ll guide you through the options during our assessment.
Can you see through window film at night?
When it is darker outside than inside, visibility works the same as untreated glass. Reflective, smoky and darker tinted films can provide daytime privacy, but at night interior lighting may allow people outside to see in.
Will window film reduce natural light?
Some films do reduce visible light in order to improve heat rejection and glare control. Optically clear films, however, are designed to maintain natural light while still improving solar performance. We work with each client to balance performance requirements (heat rejection, glare reduction, privacy) with personal preferences such as mirrored vs smoky finishes and desired natural light levels.
Will the film turn purple or fade?
Purple discolouration is typically caused by older dye-based films. The films we install are not dye-based and are designed for Australian conditions. They are backed by manufacturer warranties ranging from 7 years to lifetime, depending on the product.
What’s the difference between professional window film and hardware or online store tint?
Professional architectural films are designed for long-term performance, durability and optical clarity, and are available in wider rolls to minimise joins. A professional assessment also ensures the correct film is selected for the glass type, helping avoid issues such as thermal stress.
Will there be joins in the film?
Most windows can be installed without joins or seams. If a pane exceeds the maximum roll width (typically around 1.8 m × 1.8 m), a join may be required. If this is likely, we will discuss it with you before installation.
What brands do you use?
Is the film installed on the inside or outside of the glass?
AlpineTint is an authorised installer for 3M and Solar Gard, two of the most respected manufacturers in the window film industry. We also work with other specialist suppliers when a particular product is the best fit for a project.
Most solar control films are installed on the inside surface of the glass, where they are protected from the weather and physical damage. However, we are seeing a significant increase in exterior film applications due to the wide variety of modern glazing types. During our assessment we will determine which installation method is most suitable for your windows.
Can I purchase the film and install it myself?
Professional installation is recommended, as achieving a clean and long-lasting finish requires specialised tools and techniques. Some films are available for supply only, however AlpineTint typically installs the films to ensure the best performance, appearance and warranty coverage.
Is window film suitable for double or triple glazing?
Some window films are suitable for double or even triple glazed windows, while others are not. The type of glass, window construction and existing coatings all affect which film can be safely installed. AlpineTint assesses each project to ensure the correct film is selected and to avoid issues such as thermal stress.
Solar control window film vs double glazing
Many building owners consider replacing windows to improve heat control, however solar control window film is often the most cost-effective retrofit solution. Window film can significantly reduce solar heat gain, glare and UV exposure without the cost, disruption or construction work involved in replacing existing glazing.
